Disciplines

An atelier for artists in residence in the village of Austmarka, Finnskogen, in Southeast Norway. This quiet studio is surrounded by fresh nature, wild life, mystic forests and lakes. We welcome creative individuals worldwide from different disciplines to provide them with the opportunity for artistic production and contemplation.

We don’t have many materials, but we believe in the “take some, give some” principle. Leave something behind that you don’t need, and someone else will turn it into something wonderful. Our storage space is limited. Please make sure to bring only essential supplies and tools.

You need to have basic knowledge and work independently. We have no one who can teach you.

Animation

Bring your own camera and equipment. Be aware that the lighting conditions in the studio vary. There aren’t any good lamp lights and we don’t have photo lights or reflectors.

The studio receives great daylight. The sun affects the room in the summer from around 09.30 AM to 14.30PM. There are shorter days and periods of daylight during the winter.

There are a lot of large windows in the studio, so there is a lot of lovely natural light to work with.

Architecture

The studio can give you the peace and quiet you need to make the most intricate models.

Jewlery-Making

We have limited materials.

Experimental Fashion

If you want to work with fashion and fabrics, please be aware that we don’t have our own sewing machine.  Feel free to bring your own.

Land Art

We enjoy great support from the municipality, and they let us use the forest for land art.

The challenging part can be what happens to the land art after you leave.

There are rules you have to follow regarding safety and littering.

We are looking forward to creating a larger workshop, once the financing is established.

Management Art Theory

*** Own work groups for AiR leadership over some parts of the year?

We hope to meet up with other operators of AiR to discuss our experiences and hold workshops with regards to cross-border cooperation, and we  want this to end in a joint application for assistance.

Feel free to send us an inquiry via the application form below, so that we can gather all the people who are interested.

Sculpture

There are some limitations if you work with sculptures. You can’t expose the other guests to noise or dust. Norway is a very cold country most of the year and working outdoors is limited. It is possible to work with ice if the season allows it.

During the winter months we can have – 25C or less, so it gets quite cold.

Our studio is supposed to be a quiet place, so keep that in mind and  think about the people around you.

There are possibilities to form groups were you can use tools and work together.

Textile

We don’t have many tools or materials for textile projects. We will try to help you get equipment if possible. Please ask in advance.

Weaving Workshop

If you are interested in weaving workshops, please contact us in advance. Extra payment may be required.

You must have basic knowledge and be self-reliant. We have no one who can teach, or set it up for you for free. The village has their own weaving workshop that we can visit and make some arrangements (note that there is only limited space). The weaving workshop is 300 meters away from the studio. It may be possible to borrow a table weave to use in the studio, but this must be arranged in advance.

There may be additional expenses for materials, depending on the materials you work with.

Academia

The house is not very sound-proof, so you can hear the other people living there.

If you prefer more silence, we recommend you bring earplugs or headphones.

We have our own stable, high-speed internet from our own dedicated optic cable.

You can apply for your own private workspace or a workspace with two workspaces for textwork.

Digital Art

As mentioned before, we have excellent internet, the upload and download speed is very high, so getting things done on the internet is no problem.

If you work with digital art or on your computer, please keep the daylight conditions in mind. We don’t have any way of keeping the sun out of the studio and the big windows allow a lot of daylight and sunshine into the room. If you do want to work with digital art, we recommend that you apply for a private working space, which is perfect for computer work.

It is better during the winter when it’s less sunlight.

Drawing & Painting

As we don’t have any ventilation systems, you are not allowed to use: turpentine, solvents or oil-based paint.

Literature

If you work primarily on your computer and need to work in a space with less sunlight or where you need a specific type of light, please let us know in your application.

Movie Editing

We have an excellent and stable internet connection with good upload and download speed which allows you to work online with your projects and send big files if necessary.

The light in the studio can be a bit inconvenient for computer work, so consider applying for a private or shared workspace if you want to work on your computer.

Traditional Crafts

There are some materials available in the workshop. We operate by the principal that you leave more behind than what you use. This will help us become more diverse.

We have limited storage, so bring what you need and maybe you can trade or switch with something that is already in the studio.

We don’t have many tools, but other artists have left us gifts and some of their own tools.

Please respect the tools we have and treat them as if they were your own.
